2012 Pioneer DJ Stylus Awards
I’m writing this article because I’m sick of the HATE & COMPLAINTS about something that’s supposed to be for the same people that are doing the hating and complaining!
First off, let me start by saying I’m glad I could get back to Toronto this past weekend for the Pioneer DJ Stylus Awards. I’ve been going since day one and I try my best to make sure that the weekend is in my schedule each year no matter where I’m at.
But I have a serious issue with what I call a sickness… A “condition” if you will. And that issue is the lack of appreciation by ALL DJs and artists, when this event IS FOR THEM! People have been murmuring for years about this issue and ain’t nobody really speak on it publicly. Well the time has come, cause I’m a speak on this bullsh*t!
There is wayyyyyyyyy too much complaining going on in regards to the categories, nominees and winners at the Stylus Awards. There’s complaints about the venue, there’s expectiations on what DJs & artists should be receiving, there’s hate on who’s performing, there’s jealousy about who wins… This is just faaackin’ ridiculous! As my Grandmother would tell me when I would whine over nonsense as a kid, “STOP THE BLOODCLAAT CRYING!” All us DJs and artists need to be thankful there even is a damn award show for the whole country of Canada that even recognizes the “work”. Instead of complaining, why not praise or even offer support to assist. Nobody owes you sh*t! Remember that… It’s life. Do you know how hard it is to put together a show of that magnitude, much less a whole weekend of events??? I’ll tell you… Hours of meetings, plenty of dedicated volunteers, sponsorship proposals, rehearsals, extensive communication, all types of other sh*t and most of all MONEY! And you “cry baby ass” DJs and artists have the nerve to buy a ticket, or even worse, get your free pass to hate on the result??? Well, you’re a HEEEEEDIOT!!! (word to my Jamaicans)
The sad thing is, it comes from within. Not only, from the industry but the city of Toronto on a whole. We have peers (s/o my peeps like DJ Sina, DJ Dlo, DJ Arems, Hedspin, Keith Dean, DJ Fresh etc.) from around the country that drive or pay flights & hotels to come celebrate with their fellow DJs only to be met with ridicule, fake love and almost disrespect just cause they ain’t from Toronto. What kinda sh*t is this??? But yet Mr. Toronto DJ is so quick to link them to line up a booking in their city and won’t even consider returning the favor. But that’s a whole other issue I won’t even address right now. There are a few of us that embrace and welcome our out-of-town guests, but it’s not enough of us. Yes, Toronto is the “big city”, and one of the reasons the Stylus Awards are held in T-dot. However, them dudes touch turntables and rock parties just like you in their city. And with probably way more “city support”. Show respect! That’s all…
Now back to the show… Not only was I told personally these complaints but I also over heard them. Like so-and-so DJ didn’t deserve whatever award and sh*t… Why can’t you just be happy for’em??? You can have your opinion, no doubt, but if you lost… Then sucka, you just lost! It was public voting to even get nominated… So don’t b*tch about that because someone else’s fan base supports them more! Whatchu want them to do, tell they’re supporters to pull back and not vote??? Get your own hustle on and build your network! And if you think an award certifies or vindicates you, once again you’re a HEEEEDIOT!!! Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Cruise have NEVER won an Oscar. Does that make them any less great of an actor? Or dismiss their classic films??? Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing and Reggie Miller all were NBA All-stars and retired WITHOUT a ring. Does that make them any less of good players??? Some of your favorite artists have not and maybe will never win a Grammy. Will you stop listening to their music now??? ALL ANSWERS ARE NO!!! Stay grindin’… Grow up and stop acting like snotty-nosed children and sensitive pincushions.
I had one DJ (who shall remain nameless only because it would involve way too many people, otherwise I’d fully state) say to me, “How the hell did DJ Lissa Monet win for Toronto DJ of The Year? She shouldn’t even be in that category, she should be in Female DJ of The Year!” REALLY??????????? Is that what it’s come too? Me and Lissa go way back, so immediately I checked this fool! Why would you pay a ticket to come hate??? I never see this in any other city that has an awards show of similar proportion. It’s just sad… I go to the afterparty. I pass and get a shake from one of the Stylus organizers, and I say “y’all did a another great job”. And to that I get an emphatic, “thank you man, so much, that’s all I needed to hear instead of all the expectations and complaints”. Right there!!! That sh*t should NOT be happening man. Real talk… In the immortal words of Jay-Z, “where’s the love”??? And don’t even get me started on all the hate whispers and suttle “boooos” I heard when Drake’s producer who is from Toronto also, wins the Producer Of The Year award. Or when The Weeknd, also from Toronto, wins his awards. Why??? Just because they’ve excelled beyond the “local” industry that they’re no longer deserving??? C’mon Toronto, enough is enough. Spread love! Support each other. The more of us that buss through that “international door”, the better the focus is on not just our city, but the country on a whole. We all win! We are one of the only major cities that does NOT consistently support our own. I rep Toronto everywhere I go. No matter what city I’m working in, visiting or living in. People know that… But this is something I’m definitely NOT proud of. Especially, when I’m in these cities and telling people where I’m from and they say, “whoa Toronto… Yo I heard it’s mad hard to get love out there.” And what’s worse, I can’t even deny the sh*t. Anyways, I’m going off track and making it more about the city then the core complaints of the awards show.
But this is my sole point. What if the Stylus Awards were gone? Never to come back… What would the complaints be then??? Be happy it’s here! Everybody in the industry should support it and cut the damn HATE & COMPLAINTS!
Shoutout to the whole Stylus Group staff for all the hard work! Respect to the sponsors for supporting such a dope cause and event. Big up all the nominees and winners, specifically the ones who ain’t hate or complain. And salute to all the presenters, performers and host my dude Trixx, as it takes guts to do what you do in front of a crowd that includes haters.
That’s it! I’m done with my rant. I’ve already labeled a new folder in my email called “Stylus Hate Mail”, so bring it haters! You can even comment below… You’re all welcome. And if you don’t like or don’t agree with what I just wrote, thanks for clicking and reading, now GO EAT A D*CK!!! I bite my tongue for no one.
P.S. Shoutout to Kreesha Turner, she can get it! Grrrrrrrrrrrrr… Nice performance.
P.P.S. Shi Wisdom ripped that cypher! You ill girl.

Now I’m gone to go eat some Popeye’s chicken and biscuits. Y’all be easy… Watch these cyphers from the show if you missed’em. Big up all the MCs and shoutout to CityOnMyBack, Montreality and HipHopVancouver (HHVtv) for filming them and completing the concept!
