Police shot a DJ in the leg during an album release party hosted by Rick Ross and Diddy late Sunday (March 2), reports the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
Two off-duty, uniformed officers were returning fire outside the Velvet Room when they hit the shooter, who was later identified as the club DJ. The incident occurred around 4 a.m., when one of the two cops heard gunshots come from the back of the venue.
According to Dekalb County Public Safety Director Cedric Alexander, the suspect, whose name has not been released, turned towards the police and “started firing shots.” The officers fired off rounds of their own, hitting the suspect in the leg. The DJ’s motive has not been identified. “For whatever unknown reasons, it appears that this DJ, who was involved in the shooting with some others, turned and shot at the officers, and that’s when they returned fire,” said Alexander.
The wounded DJ made his way back inside the club and was arrested before he was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment.
Rozay and Diddy were on hand to celebrate the debut of Mastermind, the Miami rapper’s sixth studio album, which is executive produced by the Bad Boy mogul. Neither were involved in the violence, Alexander said. The two shooting officers have been placed on a standard administrative leave while the incident is being investigated. “They took all the necessary actions to protect themselves and each other,” added Alexander.
The shooting was the second outbreak of violence to follow a Diddy appearance this weekend. Before he stopped off in ATL, the 44-year-old was in North Carolina to celebrate the annual Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) basketball tournament. Two men were shot in the leg at a party he hosted inside the Sheraton Hotel Saturday (March 1). One suspect was arrested in the incident.
Police have identified the suspect who has surrendered in the shooting death of rapper Wiz Khalifa’s uncle in the parking lot of a Pittsburgh-area fast food restaurant.
Police say 17-year-old Jaron Young, of Penn Hills, is charged as an adult with criminal homicide in the Wednesday night shooting of 20-year-old Imani Porter.
Porter, of Pittsburgh, was parked in a Steak ‘n Shake parking lot in suburban Munhall when he was shot. He died at a hospital Thursday.
Allegheny County homicide detectives believe Porter planned to sell heroin to Young and another still-unidentified suspect when he was, instead, shot in the head.
Khalifa has tweeted that his uncle was “younger and more level-headed than all of us.”
Young denied involvement to reporters as he was taken into custody.

A crowded nightclub was cleared out after a man was shot at a sold-out hip-hop concert early Thursday morning.
Around 1,800 fans were in attendance to watch rapper Young Jeezy perform at the Sound Academy, located at 11 Polson St., near Lake Shore Blvd.E. and Parliament St., when a man was shot three times in the torso, police said.
The shooting took place around 12:30 a.m., after the opening acts and before the headliner took the stage, said Catherine Fowler, a Sound Academy spokesperson. She said concert-goers heard the shots inside the venue but there was no evidence of gunfire or damage found.
Police attended the scene, but the victim was dropped off at a nearby hospital a while later by someone other than paramedics, said Const. Tony Vella.
The victim, 26, is in serious but stable condition.
There were no other victims, and investigators are still looking for suspects.
On his Twitter page, Young Jeezy made no mention of the shooting, but said he would return to Toronto. “Backstage @ Sound Academy in Toronto! Police closed venue and cancelled the greatest show!!! I will be back!” he Tweeted.
